Virtual Quasi-Chichibu 34 Kannon Pilgrimage #17 Shinpuku-ji Temple
Ennin (794-864) studied in Tang China in 838-847. In 840, he visited Mt. Wutai in Shanxi Province. During his stay there he saw Brocken specters on May 22, June 21, and July 2. He believed Manjusri appeared in front of him.
After he returned to Japan, he toured around the Kanto Region to preach. One night, he stayed at Sueyoshi Village and felt Acalanatha. He built a hermitage, carved the Acalanatha statue, and enshrined it in the hermitage.
In the middle of the 18th century, Priest Jobin revived the temple.
The temple, of course, has an Avalokitesvara statue: the Ekadasamukha statue, which is said to have been carved by Gyoki (668-749). If so, the Ekadasamukha statue is older than the Acalanatha statue by about a century.
